2006 Comparative Orthopaedics Day

Comparative Orthopaedics Day was developed by The Comparative Orthopaedic Laboratory and The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in order to provide scientists a forum for presentation and discussion of orthopaedic research. This year, the sixth annual Comparative Orthopaedics Day will feature a keynote address by Doctor Allan Gross followed by presentations of original research in the field of orthopaedics. Dr. Gross, and others, will provide input regarding the importance and implications of these projects with respect to orthopaedic research and clinical applications.

We are incredibly excited and honored to have Dr. Kurt Spindler as our keynote speaker this year. Dr. Spindler is the consummate clinician-scientist in Sports Medicine. He is a critical thinker and an exceptional speaker. He has done a tremendous job in fostering and promoting evidence-based medicine in orthopaedics. He has also organized collaborative multicenter trials aimed at prospective, randomized , controlled research with direct clinical relevance. His major areas of interest in both clinical practice and research include intra-articular ligaments, articular cartilage defects, and meniscus health and disease. He has the amazing ability to perform extremely high level, hypothesis-driven research in these areas and bride the data to clinical practice. He has set the bar for the orthopaedic community in this regard.

Dr. Spindler holds 2 patents, has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, 10 book chapters, and given over 225 presentations in orthopaedics forums. His research is very well funded by multiple granting agencies including the Arthritis Foundation, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the National Football League. He was an Eagle Scout, has completed r marathons, is one of America's Top Doctors, and has won two Cabaus Awards, the O'Donoghue Award, and teaching awards. He is currently the Kenneth Schermerhorn Professor, Vice-Chair of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Medical Director, and Head Team Physician at Vanderbilt University.
