2009 Comparative Orthopaedics Day

Friday, April 10, 2009

Comparative Orthopaedics Day was developed by the Comparative Orthopaedic Laboratory and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in order to provide scientists a forum for presentation and discussion of orthopaedic research. This year, the ninth annual Comparative Orthopaedics Day will feature a keynote address by Dr. Hollis Potter followed by presentations of original research in the field of orthopaedics. Dr. Potter, and others, will provide input regarding the importance and implications of these projects with respect to orthopaedic research and clinical applications.

We were incredibly excited and honored to have Dr. Hollis Potter as our keynote speaker this year. Dr. Potter is universally considered the world’s leading authority on clinical magnetic resonance imaging of joints. She completed her residency at North Shore University Hospital and fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She is the author of more than 114 peer-reviewed articles and 44 chapters with a focus on cartilage imaging with development of a validated pulse sequence suitable to serve as an objective outcome standard, as well as noninvasive assessment of cartilage biochemistry and early degenerative changes. She has also developed MRI techniques to assess joint arthroplasty, including early detection of particle disease.

She is an outstanding contributing member and consistently invited speaker to the AAOS, ORS, AOSSM, ISMRM, Knee Society and the Hip Society. She is the co-recipient of the AOA Research Award, the Cabaud Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research from the AOSSM and the Nicholas Andry Award from the ABJS. She has served on the NIH/NIAMS Skeletal Biology Development and Disease Study Section since 2007 and the Musculoskeletal Disease Core Center Section since 2008. Dr. Potter has served as a consultant for the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Panel, Medical Devices Advisory Committee and Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the FDA. She is funded for both clinical and basic science research in advanced musculoskeletal imaging.

Dr. Potter has been the Chief of the Division of Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the Hospital for Special Surgery since 1994, and also acts as Director of Research for the Department of Radiology and Imaging. She is also currently a Professor of Radiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. We are thrilled to have had her give our 2009 Comparative Orthopaedics Day keynote address!
