2008 Comparative Orthopaedics Day
Comparative Orthopaedics Day was developed by the Compara-tive Orthopaedic Laboratory and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to provide scientists a forum for presentation and discus-sion of orthopaedic research. This year, the eighth annual Compar-ative Orthopaedics Day will feature a keynote address by Richard (Dick) Tarr, the president and executive director in the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute, followed by presentations of original re-search in orthopaedics.

We are excited and honored to have had Dick Tarr as our keynote speaker this year. He has a unique background and critical perspec-tive for researchers and clinicians interested in putting the science behind the surgery and developing technology for clinical applica-tion to the benefit of patients. Tarr and others will provide input regarding the importance and implications of orthopaedic research and clinical applications.
Tarr is a biomedical engineering graduate of Northwestern Univer-sity, and received a master’s degree in bioengineering from Texas A&M University. He also completed a three-year tour of duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he obtained his radiologic technologist training. Tarr served as research associate at the Uni-versity of Miami School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopae-dics and Rehabilitation and as a design engineer with Northwest-ern University’s Rehabilitation Engineering Program. He was an instructor in research orthopaedics and director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Southern California School of Medicine.
Tarr joined DePuy in 1985 and progressed through research and de-velopment, holding positions of director, Hip, Extremities, Sports Medicine, Trauma Product Development, and Ancillary Orthopae-dics; general manager, DePuy DuPont Orthopaedics; vice president, Research and Development; senior vice president, Research and Development; chief technology officer; vice president, Worldwide Research and Orthobiologics; and finally, vice president, World-wide Research and Emerging Technologies.In his 20 years of service with DePuy, Tarr was responsible for the company’s worldwide research initiatives to bring new technology products to market, particularly in the emerging technologies area. He was directly responsible for the new 50,000-square-foot research facilities in Warsaw, Ind., opened and dedicated in September 2003. In addition, Tarr oversaw re-search and development on a worldwide basis, working with the respective vice pres-idents of Research and Development in each of the DePuy busi-ness units and ensuring that DePuy retained the highest standards of product safety and efficacy.
He holds five patents on orthopaedic products and instruments and frequently speaks and publishes on orthopaedic research topics. Currently, Tarr is president and executive director of the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute. This independent non-profit orthopaedics laboratory specializes in translational research, which promotes ba-sic discoveries into clinical applications. The vision of InMotion is to make Memphis, Tenn., the center of research, innovation and entrepreneurship for discoveries to treat musculoskeletal disease and injury with the institute’s mission to reduce disability and to improve mobility for the musculoskeletal patient through transla-tional research. We are thrilled and lucky to have had him give our 2008 Comparative Orthopaedics Day keynote address!
